comparing instant coffees from two different brands
The other day, DS brought home 2 different brands of instant palm sugar coffee. I'll call the brands "X" and "Y". He liked X more than Y -- the same goes for DB.
I tried X coffee yesterday, and today i made myself a cup of Y coffee. I can see what they mean with liking X more... i'd say it had a fuller coffee taste, while Y tasted milder, a little watery compared to X. Nevertheless, I myself like them both equally; they're different, but i wouldn't exult one brand over the other.
Out of curiosity, i decided to read the ingredients label on the backside of each packet. Here are my findings:
- The net weight of instant coffee per packet was different for each brand; X's was slightly greater with difference of 2g.
- X contained a larger percentage of coffee powder than Y (~9% compared to ~8%).
- Y lacked the skim milk powder found in X. I assume this is why X's coffee was slightly frothy whereas Y's had little to no bubbles.
- X had salt listed as one of the ingredients, while Y did not. Y did contain 5g of salt (sodium in parentheses) per serving according to the nutrition table, but it is still much less than X's 35g per serving.
- Actual palm sugar was listed as one of Y's ingredients, along with "sugar" (sucrose). X's coffee, on the other hand, had sucrose on its list, but no genuine palm sugar.
- Both brands contained artificial flavoring.
- Only X contained artificial sweetener.
In X's packaging, I found a disclaimer advising against the consumption of this coffee by pregnant mothers and children below 5. The same cannot be said for Y's packaging. To be fair, though, Y's packet was slightly smaller than X's, and was already dense with information.
Why exactly did I create this post? Well, I suppose i'm just itching to write my observations for today.
